GENERAL INTRODUCTION: In Numbers 15:37-41, Deuteronomy 22:12, G-d (YHVH) commanded Moses for the Children of Israel to put "fringes" on the four corners of their garments. The Hebrew words are TZITZIT in Numbers 15:37-41 (which has a numerical value of 600); and GEDILIM in Deuteronomy 22:12. The long cord is called the shamash (servant) which wraps around all of the other strings. The number of shamash spirals between the knots is also interesting. Christian TZITZIT I make a lot of set every year and you can see my other listing for more information on various Jewish traditions and significance to the numbers in those sets. There is typically a significance to each number used in making tassels (tradition). I have had enough requests for these and have made enough of them to go ahead an list them for those of you who are looking for them along with my understanding of the numbers. An explanation of the meaning: There are three white strings (white represents holiness/purity)There is one red string (crimson/scarlet represents the blood of Christ shed for the entire world)The red string is longer than the rest and wraps the white strings (according to some, this represents the long-awaited second coming of the Messiah - there is also the concept of the shamash which is connected to the idea of servanthood - Christ died for the world, establishing the Church, the red binds all of the white - also, the Menorah has a shamash - the first candle lit which is used to light the other 6 branches, Christ is the light of the world, we are also the light of the world - this is the shamash string) There are 6 sets of double knots (this represents the 6th day of creation - Adam and Eve)There are 12 total knots in a tassel (this represents 12 commandments - the typically recognized 10 commandments from the Hebrew Bible and the 2 from Christ's response in the New Testament)The red winding pattern between the knots is 3-14-12-7-33 is for the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) - Alpha/Omega (first and last) 14 is for the Via Dolorosa (a processional route of 14 traditional stations of the cross in the Old City of Jerusalem - this path is believed by many to be the journey Jesus walked on the way to his crucifixion)12 is for the 12 tribes of Israel (some say the 12 apostles) 7 is for the creation week (some say the number of perfection) 3 is for the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) - Alpha/Omega (first and last) There are different interpretations to these numbers but this what this beautiful set looks like.
